"Phantom Erosion" is a textile-based work of social critique inspired by the increasingly distorted consumer ecosystem of the recent South Korean “photocard economy.” Originally created as emotional tokens accompanying albums, photocards have—under capital-driven marketing—evolved into symbols engineered to stimulate repeat purchases, resulting in excessive production, unsold inventory, and discarded resources. By deconstructing album booklets and various photocards, Shenlu cuts apart and reassembles what once symbolized an intimate bond between idols and fans, weaving them into a piece of fabric that appears luxurious yet is riddled with contradictions. The work metaphorically exposes the absurdity behind blind consumption: emotional alienation, resource waste, and environmental damage.

During the making process, Shenlu shredded discarded album pages and photocards, twisting them into “threads” and hand-weaving them to disrupt their original visual meaning. This forms the first foundational layer—symbolizing feelings and resources that have been systematically fragmented and reconfigured. On the second layer, irregularly attached fragments of photocards evoke the residual traces of desire left behind after the frenzy of consumption—pieces that can no longer be put back together. The third layer consists of radiating lines crocheted with silver yarn and reflective fibers, mimicking the shimmering aura of idols in the fan’s imagination. These glimmers continue to shine even in darkness, just as the industry’s manufactured illusions persist despite rational scrutiny.

Both the front and back of the piece are intended for display: the front reveals the apparent glamour and order of consumer culture, while the back exposes its chaos and randomness—mirroring the dual nature of the photocard economy itself. One side gleams with polished desire; the other reveals the absurd wreckage it leaves behind.
